Most exchange programs are for either a semester or the full school year. I am not aware of any program that runs for less time. Usually you leave in early August then comeback sometime in January for the semester program or late June / early July for the year program.

Under most exchange rules you would not be staying at the same home as your friend and quite possibly both you may be in different parts of the country. Exchange programs, at least the ones I am familiar with, tend to discourage friends from going to the same area because it interferes with adapting with your host family. Also when you sign up for an exchange program you state what countries you are interested in living and the host family picks you to stay with them. Depending on the program you may move around a bit so there is no guarantee of where you will be.
